Lake Toba, located in the province of North Sumatra, Indonesia, is the largest volcanic lake in the world. It was formed by a massive supervolcanic eruption that occurred about 74,000 years ago. This eruption was one of the Earth's most explosive events in the last 25 million years, leading to significant global climatic changes. The lake itself is about 100 kilometres long, 30 kilometres wide, and up to 505 meters deep. In the centre of Lake Toba is Samosir Island, which was formed by a later uplift or resurgent dome. Lake Toba is not just a natural wonder but also a cultural one. It's a significant site for the Batak people, an indigenous group with a rich history and culture.
